Motion of micron–size particles in turbulent helium II

چکیده
Abstract The surprising result of a recent experiment in turbulent helium II is that micron–size tracer particles move with about half the speed of the imposed normal fluid. We develop a theory of the interaction of small spheres with quantized vortices and predict that the particles slip velocity (resulting from the balance of buoyancy and Stokes drag forces) must be corrected by an amount which is proportional to the normal fluid velocity, in quantitative agreement with the observations.

Overview of Direct Numerical Simulation of Particle Entrainment in Turbulent Flows
An overview of removal and re-entrainment of particles in turbulent flows is presented. The procedure for the direct numerical simulation (DNS) of the Navier-Stokes equation via a pseudospectral method for simulating the instantaneous fluid velocity field is described. Particle removal mechanisms in turbulent flows in a duct are examined and effects of the near-wall coherent eddies on the parti...

Using frozen hydrogen particles to observe rotating and quantized flows in liquid helium Gregory P. Bewley 2006 We present a novel technique for tracing liquid helium flows, and use this technique to make observations of fluid dynamics in both the normal fluid and the superfluid phases of liquid helium. To visualize fluid motions, we create a suspension of frozen hydrogen particles with diamete...

We discuss an experimental technique developed to visualize quantized vortices in helium II. We illuminate micron-sized solid particles of hydrogen suspended in the fluid, and mark quantized vortex cores within the volume observed by a camera. While, under some circumstances, the particles modify vortex dynamics by the action of viscous drag and by pinning vortex intersections, we do capture ba...

In a recent experiment Paoletti [Phys. Rev. Motivated by their experiment, we create a small 3D turbulent state in an atomic Bose-Einstein condensate, compute...
متن کاملCoagulation-induced particle-concentration fluctuations in homogeneous, isotropic turbulence
The turbulent coagulation of micron-sized colloidal particles in a liquid is controlled by the shearing motion produced by Kolmogorov scale eddies. The rate of energy dissipation has fluctuations which vary over the integral length and time scale in a homogeneous, isotropic turbulent flow. We present a model of the particle concentrations and coagulation rates in a set of fluid packets that are...
